Sources & policy

How we report

UniversalBrief publishes short, evidence-led stories. Here is how we check them before they go out.

Primary sources first

Every story starts from primary and official sources: government statements, court filings, official data and on-the-record interviews, plus wire services such as Reuters, AP and AFP.

We confirm each key fact with at least two independent sources before we publish.

Clear labels

When a claim comes from one side of a dispute or can't be confirmed, the story says so: alleged, unverified, or according to whom.

Images and videos are treated as claims until we can confirm where and when they were taken.

Developing stories

When events are still unfolding we mark the story as developing and update it as confirmed facts come in.

Corrections

If we get something wrong, we fix it and note the correction on the story. Send corrections to contact@universalbrief.com.
