Protesters oppose measures that ease the cap on yearly rent increases and make evictions easier. The government says they will boost the rental market.

Protesters marched across Lisbon on 24-10-2026 demanding affordable housing, AP reported. They oppose government measures that ease the cap on yearly rent increases and make it easier to evict tenants who do not pay. Prime Minister Luís Montenegro says the measures aim to build trust between tenants and landlords; protesters say they leave tenants more vulnerable.

Earlier in the week, police cleared housing protest camps in Lisbon and Porto and arrested 55 people, but thousands returned within hours, Reuters reported.
