The Department of Homeland Security says officers used the "minimum amount of force" after protesters interfered and damaged vehicles.

Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson has filed a complaint with the Department of Homeland Security's inspector general and called for an independent investigation after video showed federal agents pinning Ricardo Gonzalez, a former city employee who says he is a US citizen, in a gutter as he shouted that his arm was broken, Newsweek reported, citing the Los Angeles Times. The incident happened on Saturday, 17-10-2026.

His daughter, Leslie Gonzalez, said he was hit by an unmarked federal vehicle while riding his e-bike, tased twice and pinned down. He is in hospital. Long Beach police said officers found a handcuffed, bleeding man, removed his handcuffs and had fire personnel take him to hospital; they said they made no arrests and took no part in immigration enforcement.

DHS said its officers followed their training and used the "minimum amount of force" during a targeted arrest operation when protesters interfered, threatened officers and damaged government vehicles. It said ICE did not hit anyone on a bike, that the man had smashed a vehicle mirror, and that it is investigating possible charges.

Representative Robert Garcia called the videos horrific. The local council member said ICE has no place "terrorizing our streets", Common Dreams reported.
